WILDLIFE & INSECTS

Butterflies

  • Provides host material for caterpillars of satyrs and skippers such as Dun Skipper and Delaware Skipper.

Bees

  • Attracts ground nesting solitary bees that use the undisturbed soil and sheltering foliage around clumps.

Birds

  • Songbirds and wetland birds like Red Winged Blackbirds and Swamp Sparrows forage on its seed in late summer.

Beneficial Insects

  • Supports ground beetles and predatory wasps that inhabit wet meadows and help control pest populations.

Spacing & Landscape Use

Spacing Recommendations

  • Space 18 - 24 in apart in meadow or rain garden settings where dense coverage and soil retention are desired.

Landscape Placement

  • Suited for wetland restoration, bioswales, pond edges, and naturalized rain gardens where function and habitat value are priorities. Also effective as a structural native grass alternative.

Companion Plants

  • Vernonia noveboracensis (New York Ironweed) - Tall, purple flowering native with late season impact and strong pollinator value.
  • Rudbeckia laciniata (Cutleaf Coneflower) - Tall, yellow blooming perennial that thrives in similar wet soils with bold flower heads.
  • Lobelia cardinalis (Cardinal Flower) - Provides vivid red flowers and attracts hummingbirds in late summer wet areas.
  • Eupatorium perfoliatum (Boneset) - Adds upright white flowers and medicinal history to wetland designs.
  • Iris versicolor (Blue Flag Iris) - Offers striking blue flowers and thrives in shallow water or consistently wet soil.
