Melinis nerviglumis 'Pink Savannah'

$14.95

Melinis nerviglumis 'Pink Savannah' is a warm season ornamental grass prized for its shimmering pink flower heads that glow in late summer light. Its finely textured blue green foliage forms compact tidy mounds making it ideal for sunny borders, containers, or small spaces where bold movement and soft color are desired. As fall approaches the inflorescences age to a buff tan extending the season of interest well into autumn.

Native Status

Melinis nerviglumis is native to southern Africa. Though not native to North America, it performs reliably as an annual in temperate gardens and self seeds minimally.

WILDLIFE & INSECTS

Birds

  • Finches, sparrows, and other seed eating birds are attracted to the maturing seed heads in fall feeding and foraging as the plumes dry.

Beneficial Insects

  • Its tufts offer refuge to ground beetles and native predatory insects that overwinter in undisturbed clumps.

Spacing & Landscape Use

Spacing Recommendations:

  • Space 18 - 24 in apart to allow airflow and prevent crowding as the clumps mature.

Landscape Placement:

  • Ideal for rock gardens, urban meadows, or pollinator borders where soft movement and late season color are needed without excess bulk.

Companion Plants

  • Schizachyrium scoparium 'Standing Ovation' - Sturdy vertical structure and blue green blades echo the form of Melinis and extend seasonal texture.
  • Coreopsis verticillata 'Moonbeam' - Fine textured yellow blooms complement the airy habit and add a warm color echo to pink flowering heads.
  • Allium senescens subsp. glaucum - Low twisting foliage and late summer bloom timing harmonize with pink grass plumes.
  • Echinacea purpurea 'Magnus' - Upright blooms mirror the height and blend well with the grass’s tones and loose form.
  • Salvia nemorosa 'Caradonna' - Dark violet spikes emerge in contrast with the pink plumes and offer early season structure and pollinator value.
