Watering Needs: Moderate; appreciates consistent moisture, especially in hotter weather

Deer Resistance: Moderately resistant; may be lightly browsed but is not typically favored

NATIVE STATUS

Cultivated selection of Anemone tomentosa, a species native to northern China. Despite its non native origin, it integrates well into pollinator gardens and naturalistic landscapes due to its ecological benefits and naturalistic habit.

WILDLIFE & INSECTS

Butterflies

  • Nectar rich flowers attract migrating butterflies like Monarchs, offering important late season fuel.

Bees

  • Late season bees including bumblebees and solitary bees frequent the blooms for nectar.

Other Insects

  • Hoverflies, beetles, and predatory wasps may visit, contributing to garden biodiversity.
  • It is not a host plant for native caterpillars but plays a supporting role in wildlife friendly gardens.

SPACING & LANDSCAPE USE

Spacing Recommendations

  • Space 2 - 3 ft apart to allow for natural spreading and airflow.

Landscape Placement

  • Best suited for the back of borders, woodland edges, and partially shaded cottage gardens. Its height and bloom time make it ideal for filling late season gaps in layered plantings.

COMPANION PLANTS

  • Aster divaricatus (White Wood Aster) - a native fall bloomer with a delicate, airy texture.

  • Chelone glabra (White Turtlehead) - adds vertical structure and pollinator value.

  • Polygonatum biflorum (Solomon’s Seal) - foliage contrast and spring interest.

  • Geranium maculatum (Wild Geranium) - for spring bloom and ground covering habit.

  • Carex pensylvanica (Pennsylvania Sedge) - a soft textured native groundcover for shade.
